House races to avert shutdown as Trump, Biden travel to border: Live coverage

The House is set to vote Thursday on a stopgap funding bill that would avert a shutdown this weekend by punting a pair of funding deadlines later into March. House Republicans are also set to meet for the first time in weeks and will discuss how to fund the government through the end of the fiscal year — a months-long battle that has divided the Congress and been among Speaker Mike Johnson's (R-La.) biggest headaches. Also on Thursday, President Biden and former President Trump are set to make dueling trips to the U.S.-Mexico border as immigration remains a top issue on the campaign trail. "For the period of the Olympic Games in 2024, flight bookings, not just searches, to Paris are up 125% compared to the same travel period last year," the report reads. 9 Hybrid Aircraft Looking to Transform Regional Travel

Forget urban air taxis . A new class of Regional Air Mobility (RAM) aircraft promises to be the next wave of transport, replacing helicopters and even commuter trains. While most electric air taxis have ranges that work well for short hops in urban settings, these vertical takeoff and landing aircraft (VTOL) are designed as regional commuters that can use existing airports, while "vertiports" are being built to create transportation hubs. RAM offers the vast potential to increase accessibility and affordability of intra- and interstate travel, especially for more rural and remote communities that have been historically overlooked. In the United States, 30 major airports currently accommodate 70 percent of travelers, while the other 30 percent is split among 5,000 regional airports. But this new class of aircraft could make it possible to reach the smaller, more remote airports more cost efficiently. Here are the nine top RAM Aircraft, with many coming to an airport near you i...

Golf Travel’s Hidden Gem—For A Great Golf Trip Consider Turkey

Turkey's Belek region combines great golf courses and luxury all-inclusive resorts with beautiful ... [+] Mediterranean coastline. This is the 36-hole Cullinan Links resort. Go Türkiye Last year a record number of Americans visited Turkey (or Türkiye, the new official national name). This was no coincidence. At a time when travel to many popular destinations in Europe has become much more expensive, in some cases prohibitively so, Türkiye remains a fantastic value proposition. While prices are very affordable, the country is rich in culture, history and touristic sites, with delicious Mediterranean cuisine, and even great wines. Türkiye is also much easier to get to than many people realize, and now even easier, with more non-stop flights from more U.S. cities than ever before. On top of that, last month (January 2024) they dropped the E-Visa requirement for North Americans, saving a step and another fifty bucks. Türkiye's premier tournament venue, the 36-hole Anta...

The ‘world champions of travel’ haven’t been deterred by a dire economy

Europe's economic growth engine is clearly sputtering, but that isn't getting in the way of one of its citizens' favorite past times — globe-trotting. "Germans are often regarded as the world champions of travel," senior Deutsche Bank economist Eric Heymann tells clients in a note on Thursday. Citing the country's balance of payment data, he said Germans spent a record €96 billion ($104 billion) on travel services abroad, both for business and pleasure, in 2023. That's 15% higher than prepandemic levels in 2019 in nominal terms, making up for losses during COVID 19. While rising prices have probably helped boost this number, Heymann said the number is still "remarkable." That's as Germany finds itself in a bit of a rut. Citing "troubled waters" for the eurozone's biggest economy, the government cut its growth forecast to 0.2% for 2024 from 1.3% — the economy shrank 0.3% ...

How to add a stopover for spring break, summer travel plans at no extra cost

Image
Spring break is around the corner, with summer vacation plans on the horizon after that. While you make your travel plans, there's one one tip that could be worth considering when finalizing an itinerary: adding a stopover flight. At no extra charge, travelers can book what's called a stopover ticket to get an extra leg of the journey in another destination. Cari Elizabeth told "GMA" she took advantage of a stopover ticket on a trip last year. "When we were going to book our flights for Europe, we saw that it was possible to stay in the cities that we had a connection through," she recalled. "And of course, we wanted to take advantage of that because who doesn't want to go to an extra city for free?" Elizabeth said she booked her travel through the Flying Blue loyalty program via Air France and KLM to get the extra leg of her trip in Paris. Many carriers like Tap, Iceland Air, Emirates, and Hawaiian Airlines all offer stopovers on their flight...

A new high-speed rail project linking two major cities will rival the travel time of planes: ‘It’s good news’

Residents of the United Kingdom and visitors should have an even easier time traveling between London and the Scottish capital city of Edinburgh by the end of this year, as a new high-speed rail service between the two cities is expected to debut . Taking a train from one city to the other usually takes passengers around 5.5 hours, with the journey occasionally being completed in as little as 4.5 hours. The new high-speed rail, operated by LNER, will slash those times, completing the trip in just over four hours. On the way, it will make only two stops at Newcastle and York. One train will run per hour. Fare prices have yet to be announced. The trip "will be quicker, or at least as quick, door-to-door, as if you had been traveling by air," LNER's managing director David Horne said , per Euronews. The service is aiming to launch in December 2024. "It's good news," Euronews observed . That's true not just for travelers in the UK but for the planet as well....

The Chinese millennials shunning Lunar New Year travel

"For some people, the idea of setting aside 3,000 yuan (£330; $432) to go home to see family, after you take into account train tickets, clothing and gifts, can be an economic burden," says Zak Dychtwald , founder of Young China Group, a market insights and management consulting firm. "And you want to return home triumphantly, rather than with your tail between your legs." 'I want to give my parents face' Not every young millennial is avoiding the trip home – yet they aren't all travelling with open arms.  Yu Meiling, a 29-year-old freelance product manager in the eastern city of Hangzhou, will return to her ancestral village with her husband. The couple will also buy wine and cigarettes as gifts to other relatives, as per tradition. Yet expectations – and financial burdens – are weighing on her this y...
